NEW CITY!
New City was the first sector outside Santo Domingo's city walls. Its beginning marked a milestone in an ancient city that overflowed its walls due to the socioeconomic needs of urban expansion.
At the end of the last century, Ciudad Nueva, west of Santo Domingo, was a large plain called Sabana del Estado or del Rey. The municipality's boundaries began from the fort of San Gil to the Independencia Park and continued along the entire Guibia road until the Estancia de Don Damián Báez was reached.
In that extensive strip of land parallel to the curtain walls, some huts began to be built next to the walls.
These buildings grew rapidly, and in February 1884, by presidential decree of General Ulises Hereaux, the wall was ordered to be demolished to extend the streets of Las Mercedes, Santo Tomas, and La Misericordia due to the growth of urban settlements.
This is how the first sector outside the City of Santo Domingo walls, Ciudad Nueva, existed.
The first plan of Ciudad Nueva was drawn by the engineer J. M. Castillo in the year 1884, and the streets were initially marked with numbers.
In those years, the demographic progress of the sector was already noticeable.
In the plan drawn by Don Casimiro Nemesio de Moya in 1900, the breaches in the wall of Santo Domingo on the west side are highlighted. Four streets extended outside its walls: La San Pedro, La Misericordia, Padre Billini, Santo Tomas, and Las Mercedes.
Likewise, the Plaza de la Independencia, the Catholic Cemetery, La Tenería de M. Polanco, and the streets 27 de Febrero and 16 de Agosto are already visible on the map.
The first street to be formed outside the city walls in a north-south direction was Pina Street, named after the Trinitarian Pedro Alejandrino Pina by order of the City Council. This street began from the Concepción fort to the sea.
The second street was Estrelleta, named in commemoration of the battle of September 17, 1845, in the Estrelleta savannah, where the troops of the Dominican army under the command of General José Joaquín Pueblo were victorious against Haiti.
The third street was Cambronal. The City Council gave it its name on June 13, 1892, to commemorate the battle in the fields of Cambronal, in which General Francisco Sosa participated victoriously. The fourth street was Number, in memory of the battle won by the Dominican troops under the command of General Antonio Duvergé in the Sierra Number on April 17, 1849.
The fifth street is Las Carreras in honor of the battle won by General Pedro Santana in April 1849. Other names of the streets of Ciudad Nueva that remember glorious dates and memorable battles in Dominican history are Canela, Beler, and Sabana Larga.
For many years, Ciudad Nueva was considered "the patio of the colonial zone" due to the atmosphere of marginal recreation that it fostered on the west side of the walls.
One of the best ways to explore the Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo is by foot. It’s a compact area, so it’s easy to navigate and stroll around. You can rent bicycles or take guided tours for a more informative experience. If you prefer, buses and private taxis can take you on a direct road trip to the Zona Colonial.
Here are a few tips to make your trip more accessible and more enjoyable:
Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll be walking a lot.
Bring a hat and sunscreen, as it can get hot and sunny.
Take a raincoat or umbrella, as the weather can be unpredictable.
It would be best to consider taking a private tour for a more personalized experience.
Use public buses or taxis to get around the city.
Make sure to visit the Zona Colonial during the day, as it can get quiet and less safe at night.
